Featured Bayonet #10

1815- ~1840 bayonet modifications.

In this feature I will describe a number of similar modifications of Swedish bayonets.
With a bit of luck there will be some answers here as well !

1. Modification #1 of m/1747 and m/1762 bayonets

The first item is a modified m/1747 bayonet. The bayonet has a locking ring and a new straight slot at the left side of the bayonet. The original zigzag slot is kept and the socket length is unchanged. The basal reinforcement ring is also kept. The new slot has no bridge.
The bayonet is also shortened to the length of 580 mm.
The hole for the butterfly bolt where the arm and socket meets is filled, but the hole on the opposite side of the socket is kept.
This is the second bayonet with this modification I have seen, so I think it is a 'regular' modification.
The style looks very like m/1815 (m/1815-20, m/1815-26), and I think the modification is done in that era.
We have also a m/1762 bayonet modified the very same way.

The new, straight slot is cut on the left side of the bayonet.
Here we see how the original zigzag slot is kept.

Update 2009-02-05

This bayonet fits perfect on the Navy m/1833 rifle.
A large number of old navy flintlock rifles were modified to percussion rifles m/1833. (According to J ALM was this done in 1846)

2. Modification #1 of m/1799 bayonet

This modification is he same as the two above. The old slot is filled and a new shorter is ut out. A basal locking ring is mounted.
It is only the socket length that differs from the above bayonets.
The numbering on the arm is the same as well.

The old slot is filles and a new, shorter is cut up. A basal locking ring is mounted,

3. Modification #2 of m/1799 bayonet

This modification differs from the above as it is a m/1845 navy like socket.
The old mortize is filled and a new one is cut out, but the locking ring differs from the above.

The new, straight slot is cut on the left side of the bayonet. The traces of the old is visible.

4. Modification #2 of m/1747 bayonet

In the second modification of the m/1747 bayonet the length is untouched. The socket is shortened, but the socket diameter is kept. The socket has a basal locking ring and reinforcement ring. The socket looks very like m/1840, but has larger diameter. Unfortunatly is the locking ring lost (don't even think is has been mounted on this piece).
The hole for the butterfly bolt where the arm and socket meets is filled, and so is the hole on the opposite side of the socket. .
The bayonet is browned.
The whole modification is very well done.
I believe the modificaton is done in the 1840s.

Here we see the modified socket with straight slot. The basal reinforcement ring is very like the one on m/1840.
The original zigzag slot is removed.

5. Unknown bayonet

This bayonet is described under mystery bayonet #5.
I don't even know if this bayonet is Swedish, but I list it in this section because it is so like the others. The socket is just like m/1815 and the style of the bayonet is Swedish, with the exception of the lack of 'bump' in the arm and blade connection.

Socket of the unknown bayonet.
Blade and arm. Not quite 'Swedish...'

6. Modified Brown Bess bayonet

Tl Bl Sl Sd Rifle
540 440 100 24,5 Unknown
This bayonet has the zig-zag slot filled and replaced with a straight slot on the 'left' side of the socket. The new slot is 27 mm long and 6 mm wide. The socket dimensions are not changed. The reinforcement ring is modified, and there is a bridge over the new slot. It has a basal locking ring, (looking like the Swedish m/1840). The shank has a serial number in 3 mm high digits. The ricasso is stamped with a crown and there is a 'D' over '4' on the socket.
I believe it is done in the same era as the other, as the modifications are very similar.
